Not every cat is happiest living as a traditional companion animal. Some cats are more comfortable living independently in a barn, stable, warehouse, greenhouse or other safe outdoor environment where they can put their natural instincts to work.

Our Working Cat Adoption Program matches these cats with homes that provide food, water, shelter and lifelong care while giving them the freedom and space they need to thrive. In return, many working cats help naturally manage rodent populations and deter other cats from entering the area.

Most importantly, you’ll be giving a cat in need the opportunity to live safely in a permanent home.

Is a Working Cat Right for You?

A working cat may be a good fit if you have a:
  • Barn or stable
  • Farm or rural property
  • Warehouse or workshop
  • Greenhouse
  • Other safe outdoor property where a cat can live and be cared for

Working cats are typically independent and may not enjoy being handled or living inside a home. Our animal care team carefully assesses every cat to determine whether a working home is the best fit for their needs.

What to Expect

If you’re interested in adopting a working cat, here’s how the program works.

Before your cat comes home, you’ll need to:
  • Provide a secure enclosed space where your cat can stay for the first two to four weeks while they adjust to their new surroundings.
  • Provide safe shelter year-round, including during winter and overnight.
  • Provide fresh food and water every day.
  • Commit to caring for your working cat throughout their life.
Then:
  • Complete the Working Cat Adoption Program application.
  • Our Adoptions team will review your application.
  • Approved applicants are added to our waitlist.
  • When a suitable working cat becomes available, we’ll contact you to discuss the next steps.

Adoption Fee & Veterinary Care

Every working cat is:
  • Spayed or neutered
  • Vaccinated
  • Microchipped

This veterinary care is valued at more than $400.

There is no set adoption fee for working cats. We suggest a minimum donation of $50, which helps us provide care for more animals in need.
